Distribution of Donated Milk Powder - Part 3

HELP Community Learning Center is the beneficiary of the final batch of the milk powder allocated for 1M1C. We made appointment with Chris, the project coordinator for the center to deliver the stuff. Project MADE also add-on Maggie Mee and biscuits for the children.

The center is an informal school for the children of the Burmese that are residing in Kepong. Some of the families are registered UNHCR refugees while the rest are still in process. As most of the parents are working to support their living, the children are mostly left unattended. Hence, HELP Community fill in the gap to educate the children and prepare them for their future new home e.g US. Canada.

The school current holds about 130 students, which covers from kindergarten to primary syllabus which covers English Maths. UNHCR pays the salary of 2 school teachers, while HELP itself pay for the rest of the 3, topping up RM200 to the one paid by UNHCR. Hence, with rentals and miscellaneous expenses, the monthly expenses is no small amount.

We arrived at 1030am and had the helpful hands of the kids to carry the stuff to center (3 flight of stairs!). The center located in a 4 storey building, where they occupied 3rd and 4th floor. Rental is RM500 for the former and RM600 is for the latter. Chris later briefed Ainie and myself on the center and explained the issues running the center and requirements.

Distribution of Donated Milk Powder - Part 2

This would be the second last batch (19 cartons) of milk powder that was allocated to 1M1C by Hjh Ainie for distribution. I contacted HOPE WW after remembering one of my school mate is working with HOPE. So, thats the reason why you should attend school reunions!

After going through a bumper to bumper crawl on a hot Saturday morning, we manage to locate the Hope clinic located at Sentul. We were greeted by Ms. Katy, the Executive Director for the center. The clinic is located on top of a sundry shop, and an additional Learning Center on the next shoplot. Monthly rental is RM2800 for both premises.

Katy bring us around the center and explained to us on their operations, clinics, food distribution to the poor, children activities such as reading program and painting. There are currently 70 families receiving monthly food contribution from HOPE. Poor families can apply for food contribution and they will be interviewed to see if they are eligible for the contributions.

The clicnic started in 2000 and had serve more than 6000 poor recipients in the community. The treatments are free for the needies and it runs with 2 full time nurse and volunteers/retired doctors.

While we were there, a few families came up to the clicnic for the art class in the afternoon, and later was joined by a group of student volunteers from Mt Kiara International School.

As it was a busy day for Katy, we excused ourselves and headed out for lunch. It was an interesting visit and its good that HOPE is making a difference in the community. You can get more details about HOPE WW from their blog and volunteer your time as well.

Persatuan Rumah Kebajikan Sri Baba, Klang

This was an urgent call to provide 6 fans to this old folks home. I was informed by Ms Ng and Ms Sally and I visited the home to get more details.

The home is Persatuan Rumah Kebajikan Sri Baba, Klang located oppposite Klang Telekom office at Jalan Meru. The caretaker is Mr Mohan and being helped by his mother.

The home consist of 27 old folks and 6 children with a mix of both sexes. The kids goes to nearby Tamil school.

When we arrive at 4pm, they were cooking early dinner. The olk folks were sitting outside the house, as there is not much space inside the house. 1M1C contributed basic groceries for them and also manage to find sponsors for 4 wall fans and 2 ceiling fans. Ms Ng's brother was willing to volunteer to do the wiring and fan installation for free.

Distribution of Donated Milk Powder

Hjh Ainie from Project Made contacted me that she managed to get 50 cartons of baby milk powder for distribution. I was elated to know that some kids will be benefited from this contribution. The first home that benefited from the donation is Pusat Jagaan Rumah Perlindungan Sosial NCWO-YMCA Klang, which has 5 kids under their care. I have a quick chat with the elder children and gave them 5 cartons before heading to the next home.

The next home is not new to us - Padmasambhava Children Loving Association, which we have done few activities with them. I was earlier told by Angel that they have 10 kids within the age range of 1-3 (the milk powder is for kids age 1-3 only). While I was there, a group of well-wishers were there to see the home and donated groceries to the home. I gave 15 cartons to them.

The last home for the day was sending the milk powder to Pusat Jagaan Anbe Sivam, I gave them 2 cartons as there is only 1 kid there.

I distributed out total of 22 cartons of the milk powder for the day, and will distribute the rest to a local church and NGO once I get confirmation. A big thank you to the sponsors who had contributed the milk powder and Hjh Ainie who managed to secure the 50 cartons for 1M1C to distribute.

Purpose: To change 15 old mattress for the home, lunch catering, entertaining the old folks and aid contribution.

The Old Folks home is located above the casket shop. This is 1M1C revisit after our first visit in Sep 2011. This visit is the THIRD visit in January 2012. (*we may need to rename 1M1C to 1M3C, or latter 1M many Cs). Anyway, it is a happy thing that we are organising, coordination and having more charity.

Our helpers are helping to reorganised the papers, old newspapers for reselling purpose.

Back to School for Help Education Center (Mynmar Refugee) Kepong Metro Prima

January 15, 2012: Is back to school for local and also for Mynmar Refugee's children too.

We received SOS email from Mr. Chris (founder of Help Education Center) requested donation on exercise books, biscuit and other items.

our group has set a small budget for the exercise books (700 units)

1M1C KL branch went to POPULAR bookstore (*Due to CNY, all of us super busy), we did a quick purchase and bargain with POPULAR for special discount based on the reason we are buying in a big bulk (700 units) and it is for charity work.

Guess what? We managed to get a 10% discount (Better than nothing la)!!!
Our coordinator packed it in 2 IKEA recycle bags (Please use more recycle bag to save the earth) and delivered it to Chris on a very HOT Sunday evening.
The total cost is RM 398.60.
We would like to extend our appreciation to JOEY LIONG who obtained partial funds from SK Chow (RM200) and Joy Chow (RM100). 1M1C topped up RM 98.60.

2012 CNY Feeding at SRJK Hin Hua Klang (Part 2)

We completed the CNY feeding in about 45 minutes. Great efforts were made by the Mr Leow, Mr Chin (PIBG chairman) to get the families that were not there. Hence, we decided to split the 9 pax of goodie bags to one orphanage and one female handicap center. I had earlier inform them that we will be dropping by around lunch time. The first home that we delivered was Pusat Kasih Sayang YWCA, which we have donated some food stuff last month.With the 9 goodie bags, we deliver 5 packs to this home... or was it 4 packs? ;)

Before we left, Mdm See also gave the caretaker the balance of the angpow, which is 9 packs. We excuse ourselves as we head out to another nearby orphanage. This home was also visited by us earlier and while we were there, there were no kids at home, except a baby as the rest of the kids were taken out for a CNY luncheon.

We chatted with the 3 Indonesian maids, asking about the home and what are the things they required. From what we see, the home is well managed and the place is a good environment for the kids. It has a good living environment and you can probably guess how the home is run. We look around the place and took some photographs before we call it a day.

As we called it a day, all of us were very happy how things turn out for this feeding. I believe this is one of our best event that we had organised, and with every event, we learn new things. Ainie and myself did a post-mortem via email on our activities to identify in which area that we can improve in future feedings. But I guess, the feeling of able to make a difference in other people's life really makes us happy as 24 hours ago, both of us were worried sick! Again, I cant help but to thank our fellow donors again (and again!!!), for their time, contributions and efforts, in which without YOUR participation, it would not have been a successful event.

I would like to end this entry with this link, where the world is too big for us to change, yet every single one of us can make a difference if we work together to make the world a better place.

Update 18/1/2012 :- Was informed by Ainie that for this CNY feeding, we only spent RM79.. and splitting 50-50 between Project Made & 1M1C, we only pay RM34.50!

2012 CNY Feeding at SRJK Hin Hua Klang (Part 1)

The planning for CNY started right after Gombak Orang Asli feeding, started with the question "Do you want to do CNY feeding?". Well, I guess the rest is history! :) As Ainie and myself started to plan on who would be our target recipients, when to do it, what to donate, things beginning to start to fall into place. We posted the event on Facebook and spread the word, and donation started to come in. With donation coming from everywhere, the goodie bag's contents begin to grow!

Volunteers from Neuramatix

As there are MANY places that we can help, the decision to help who is also not easy. We later decided that we would go back to the school (SRJK Hin Hua Klang), where we did our Back To School program last year. We had initially decided to deliver to every single home, but with 30 homes to distribute, it is unlikely we can finish in a 2 hours session due to the scattered locations the recipients are living. We managed to contact the school headmaster, which willingly allow us to use the school as a distribution point. The headmaster, Mr Leow and Asst. HM, Ms Tan was kind enough to inform the families for us by issuing a memo to the families to come over on Sunday. It was a relieve for Ainie and myself to know we have a place to distribute. Our worst case scenario would be doing it outside the school, which is along the road!

Donor started to arrive as early as 1000am, and we immediately unload the groceries, and as more donors came, we started to arrange for ease of collection later on. Parents and children begin to arrive and we start the registration. We have Mr Leow's two son to help with the registration of the parents and cross check with the name list supplied earlier. By 11am, we already have 18 families in the hall. As the school tried calling the balance of the 7 families, we start the event. I will let the photos speak for themselves here.....

We completed about 12pm and manage to distribute to 21 families, with the balance of 9 goodie bags. We decided to proceed to distribute to 2 homes, one is an orphanage and the other is a handicap center for woman. Stay tune for Part 2! :)

2011 has just passed and 1M1C is 2 years old! As per our original 'mission statement', we have been consistently doing 1 charity a month and sometimes more, depending on resources and time.

For the year 2011, the accounts are as below :-

Balance C/F to 2012 : RM 1,104.91

For this year activities, beside the normal visit to the orphanages and homes, we also start to do feedings for the poor, a joint venture activity with Project Made. We have made trips to Mentakab and Kuala Selangor for the feedings. It has been an adventurous year for 1M1C, as we covered area outside Klang Valley.
We also tried co-sponsored a soup kitchen in Shah Alam for a day, with planning and logistics done, but was postponed to the next month due to sudden emergency, and later, it closed down due to lack of funding. My last check was, they are back in business. We also kick start our first Back To School Program to provide for the poor students in SRJK Hin Hua Klang and also Orang Asli community in Gombak. Hopefully, we will have yearly budget for the Back To School program in the future.

For 2012, we are planning the following projects :-

Festive season feeding for the poor
Sponsor a soup kitchen.
Year end back to school program 2013

We have come a long way since we started 2 years ago, where we didnt have the experience or know-how to do it. But we learned a lot along the way, from smaller homes to feeding 30 families. It is an eye opener for us as well, knowing that there are more people in needs in the society. Perhaps, the best thing we know is, we are in a position to make a difference in others' life. Our original intention is to spread the spirit of giving, and while you may not join us in our monthly activities, but we do hope you would make a difference to a home within your area.

As we juggle between work and 1M1C activities, we do appreciate if any of the readers can give us a hand to let us take a breather! We would love to share our experience so that the spirit of giving is spread across to a wider area!

Here, I would like to thank the following people who has been supporting 1M1C for such a long time, as without your efforts, time and money, all of this would not have been possible.

My sincere thanks to Lai's family for supporting our efforts in order to keep the spirit of 1M1C alive.
I also like to thank many individual donors that had donated to 1M1C, which the list is too long to be mention! Without the support, it would be a little bit tough to maintain what we are doing now.

Balance of Groceries Distribution

As there were balance of 7 packs of groceries, we decided to donate it to homes that needs it. I donated to an old folks home, which we have previously visited before, which is Pusat Warga Emas (Klang). My arrival was unexpected its only 930am. They just finished breakfast and I can see one of the volunteers cleaning up the home. I exchange pleasantry with the caretaker, dropped the groceries and sign off the visitor book.

Goodie bags include 'ikan bilis'..which was much welcome by the caretaker.

I proceed to another nearby home, which take cares of Down Syndrome children and handicapped children. The home is very new, as they basically tore down the old house and rebuild the home at the cost of RM1 million. They just moved into the house in May 2011. Hence, everything is still new and still need some things.

There are 20 tenants here, with 5 staffs. I saw 2 Indonesian maids in the house to help out as well. The tenants also recycle newspaper and does some packaging to generate income for the home. I was brought around the house to see the condition.

I proceed to find another orphanage in need, but couldnt find the location the last time. Again, failed miserably today. Hence, I decided to drop the final 3 groceries bag at Pusat Jagaan Anbe Sivam.

Orang Asli Feeding and Christmas Party 2011

One of the activities planned for 2011 was to have an event for the Orang Asli. I have actually no idea where, when or how I will do it. But I think when you put your head into it, things will just fall into place. After much delayed, I manage to squeeze this into Dec event. I made contact to one of the Raleigh volunteer who put in me in touch with his friend and then the local contact person. We had about 1 month of planning and discussion prior to the event. As I was very busy with work, Hj Ainie from Project MADE had willingly organize the logistics for me. This event, could not had happen without her diligence, her volunteers, donors and for this, I am very grateful for her help! Both of us had sleepless night the night before and was still up at 2am SMS-ing each other!

The road to the village

During the planning session, we went on site 2 times, the first to get to know the local contact person and the second time, to check the location, as we were worried that the location might be deep in the jungle. Based on the first visit, we were told that the hall is 'walking distance'. Later we realised that maybe there might be a different definition between native and a city boy. So, to ensure I dont drag the whole bunch of volunteers through the mud (literally), we feel its better to check it out! To our relieve, it was reachable by car and no walking required (lucky for city people like us!).

After loading the stuff in our cars, we proceed to McDonald Gombak and arrive about 930. It was fully pack due to the number of people heading to Genting. Somehow, we manage to get all the FB volunteers and if I am not wrong, I think attendees were 100%!!! :) The first ever!!! We have about total of 11 cars in the group.

As we depart from McDonald to check point 2, a team of volunteers from Raleigh was already there waiting for us. From there, we proceed to our destination. The scenery to the destination is just great, with forest at both side of the road (and some rubbish too!~ hey, we are MALAYSIANS!).

Yup.. this is Malaysia...

Upon arrival, the volunteers help unload the stuff and with so many of them, the stuff were move very fast! And the next activity will be sorting them into the Ikea bags donated by a volunteer. To let you judge the amount of things for this trip, check out the photos! We have an experience volunteer, Zaidi to setup the work area to ensure ease of distribution of good bags.

I was a bit stress to see so many things to do but was put at rest seeing so many volunteers automatically doing what is required. A good 'rest' for me in a busy day. We basically had about 20+ volunteers, aside from 1M1C, with the additional coming from PM. Volunteers were busy registering the recipients, organising the school uniforms, school bags, stationaries... while another batch was busy putting in all the goodies in the bags. Basically, the number of volunteers were great. All those youngsters help out in organising the stuff, moving stuff.. and we have family volunteers which provided their own cookies and sweets to the children.

The caterers came in later, with food for 170 ppl...as the local contact gave us 70 people from this village..while the rest are from 'nearby' village. And we begin to start worrying as if they rest of the people will turn up? I can see local contact pax bit stress and was frequently on the phone. It was a stressful for everyone but I think it is beyond his control, while on our end, what is going to happen to the rest of the goodies bag and food? As the goodies bag were all sorted out, we decided to start the makan first. As we eat, and eat, and eat...these 'nearby' ppl were no where insight, and was feeling really bad to have so many people waiting.

Bit heavy stuff actually..

For the additional food, we manage to find the orphanage and called up and told them we have food to donate and the contact person willingly accept it. As the 2nd batch of recipients didnt turn up, we decided to call it a day.

We proceed to this Muslim orphanage that is before the village.The orphanage is not well-maintained properly and the wooden buildings are just built beside the river and water stream. We thought it was a bit strange to see a Muslim orphanage in a bad condition. Later we met the ustaz as a matter of courtesy, and hurriedly excuse ourselves when his sermons was about to start.......;)

Once the food stuff were given, it was about 2pm and we decided to call it a day. We departed the from the orphanage, and hoping to meet our newly found friends in the next activity. With this, I would like extend my sincere thanks to the following people, who made this activity a success event.

Back To School Program By Sri Narayani Foundation

For this Back To School program, this is one of the home that Sri Narayani Foundation (SNF) selected to receive the funding of RM200 per head. The allocated budget was RM200 per kid. I was requested to organise the logistics for the Back To School program.

A total of RM4000 Mydin voucher was given in order to purchase the uniforms. For the allocated RM200, we manage to get 2 pairs of uniform and 2 set of shoes for each kid. Some of the shoes comes with free socks, hence no need to spend additional money on that. We had earlier called Mydin to confirm the availability of the uniforms, which was told that it will only come over the weekend. Hence, we set the Monday, 5th Dec to buy the uniforms for the kids.

SNF was represented by Mr Manian, Vanan & 3 others (sorry..cant remember the name). We meet up for a quick breakfast and the kids arrived at 1015am, and proceed to the school uniform section. The first batch of 7 older kids start to select their uniforms and test it out.

Once they have completed with their uniforms, they proceed to the shoe section. They selected 2 shoes each and the staff, Mr Wong and his team, was very helpful. His team basically ensure the kids gets the size they want, ensure they get 2 each, and collect all and bring down to the counters. And with the crowd started to come in, I was already losing track who is who...since all of them wear the same Tshirt..(age is catching up..!).

Once the elder kids are done, we send them out to ease the traffic, and the 2nd batch of smaller kids' turn. There were about 10 kids and while Mandy was handling one kids, the rest of them were just enjoy playing with themselves. Same process applied after they are completed.

We spent a total of RM3661.25 out of the RM4000 budget, and there were 11 school shirts which is out of stock and 2 kids which didnt come due to sickness. As we are expecting the additional purchase to exceed the balance, 1M1C will sponsor the balance.

It just feels good to their happy faces and excitement getting their new uniforms and shoes. Again, a BIG THANK YOU to SNF for a big sponsorship to the orphanage. Back To School Program 2011

After months of planning, the Back To School (BTS) 2011 program was finally completed today. The school identified was SRJK(C) Hin Hwa, Klang. For this program, the project is sponsored by 2 donors, with 20 primary students sponsored by SNF (Sri Narayani Foundation), while another 10 secondary-to-be students by Project MADE and 1M1C.

We had earlier requested the school to identify 20 poor students for SNF sponsorship, and was asked if we can provide another 10 Std Six students that will be leaving the school. Project Made and 1M1C decided to take this up as a separate initiative. Project MADE sponsored 2 sets of school uniforms & stationary, while 1M1C sponsored 10 bags and RM30 BATA vouchers. For the SNF sponsored students, they were given RM200 Mydin vouchers.

We arrived at the school at 11:45am (no, not at 11:11:11am) meet up with the Asst. HM (Student Affairs) and introduced ourselves. The asst. headmistress announced the students' name via PA system, and at that moment, I felt 20 years younger after being out of the school for so long. ;).. The students quickly arrived and she did a headcount to ensure all are around. I noticed that most of the students' clothing were old and worn out and my heart just sank. The white shirt worn by the some of the male students had lost its shinning white colour and the shirt collar is so soft, god knows how many years it has been worn.

We proceed to the assembly point and got the students line up, and while the Asst. HM read the names, the HM distribute the vouchers. Ainie had gracefully labeled each yellow-pow packet with student's name for ease of distribution. There were a few that didnt come as they were in the afternoon session. We handover the balance to the HM.

Deepavali Feeding at Mentakab

For Deepavali, we were invited by Project MADE to participate in the feeding at Mentakab, and we gladly help along. As usual, all purchases are done earlier and it needs to be repack. I cant imagine the amount of work required done by Ainie! We meet up at at McDonald Gombak toll at 730am for breakfast before we start our day. For this feeding, the team covers Mentakab, Karak, Temerloh, Maran, Jerantut and Kuala Krau. The total contigent were 6 cars with 1 lorry carrying the boxes of dry food.

For this Deepavali feeding, we had 2 surprises. One was 40 packs of dry food donation from the The Textile Merchant Traders Association of Jln. Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jln. Masjid India and Jln. Melayu. There is also a generous donor who gave RM200 for distribution.

The feeding pack consist of rice, sugar, flour, oil, dhall, sardines, fruit cordial, biscuits, milk, chili sauce, fresh vegetables, chicken, fresh fruits, cakes and many, many more food items. 500 Gardenia bread rolls were also available for distribution to the kids and this is the tough one to finish!

The extra ordinary Ong family came in full force for the distribution. They donated 40 bag of fruits, 40 sponge cakes, candy sticks, jelly cups, lollipops, choc wafers and apples.

It took the whole team 12 hours to complete this feeding and everyone is glad we complete it, even though we overshot by 3 hours. It was another 2 hours journey back to KL, but I think it was a worthy cause to do this for Deepavali with so many homes in need. We hope our small contribution will help them in this festive celebration.

I was informed that there is an orphanage that need some help. So, quickly created the event and manage to get a few volunteers to join us. Nowadays, it seems my events are super last minute and just too rush for volunteers to attend. My apologizes on that as due to heavy work load, I do not have time to really plan where to go. Also, my apologizes for my super late entry as we visited it on 4th Sept 2011.

Anyway, back to the home, it consist of 7 homes, linked together and currently, there are 49 orphans, aged from ZERO months to 20's. With a bunch of 49'ers to take care, its really a big task for the caretakers. 2 of the kids are in college now, while the rest are mostly school children. We were greeted by the caretaker, Ms Angel and were brief on their daily operation, their needs and issues.

Most of the kids here are either Chinese, Indians or mixed parentage.
This kid's (below) father is a Malaysian and mom is a Cambodian. As they were never legally married, and father has since abandon the mother, hence this boy is country-less. Based on what Ms.Angeltold us, JPN notified the home that they will do a DNA test to identified the kid's citizen (huh?) and will send him back if he is not a Malaysian citizen. Er... dont ask me, I am as blur when I heard this from the caretaker. There are a few orphans that do not have birth certificate as well...and I believe many of us take this for granted.

DNA can tell you country of origin..? Dont ask me....

The center also receive a lot of grocery donation, hence with the excess, every 3rd week of the month, they will give out to the needies. The criteria for the eligibility would be as below :-
1) No Astro in the house
2) Must produce hospital records if they claim sick n unable 2 work
3) Must produce water/electricity bills (to see their usage)
4) Must produce details of each member of family, such as age, working/studying, show proof of income etc
5) Will make a visit to see the condition of house itself, spot any luxurious items etc

The amount to be given to each recipient will depend on the number people in the household. Once a while, they do do spot check to ensure the donations are not abused.

For our visit this time, we spend almost rm800 on the food items, which the bulk of it goes to the milk powder. Each tin cost about RM60+ and it takes a big chunk of the budget, but due to the baby's needs, we buy what is necessary for them. We are glad that Project MADE donated 12 boxes of 1 liter Milo for the home, as it will help to save the morning expenses on Milo. Again, Mr & Mrs Ong donated 3 baby cradle stand!

As most of the 49ers' are students, they need a lot school stationary like exercise books, bags & stationary. Items required: Milo,sweeten creamer, biscuit, salt, sugar, cooking oil,onion, garlic, rice, cane food, eggs, medical (anti bat cream, paradox), diapers, dry noodle, bee hoon, soya sauce, fresh milk, mosq coil, spray, garbage bags.

Important notice: please call Uncle Cheong to check what is the items needed the most a day before visit. This is to avoid over supply and expiry of foods.

First of all, I must apologies officially to all volunteers of 1M1C, as I hibernates since 12 June till 17 Sept due to very serious personal matters to be reconcile. I would like to thank all members that continues support this group in our objective to help those who needed.

On 18 Aug, when I called, below questions cross to my mind after the conversation with the care taker.
1. What is your first impression of an old folks home that has 55pax of abandon senior citizens from GH & welfare department?
2. What do you think when you get to know that the care center is located inside chinese cemetery?
3. How do you feel if the care taker told you that the seniors stays at the care center which is located above a coffin shop?

It sound scary and feel spooky when the first time I heard that over the phone with Uncle Cheong. When I was there this noon 18.9.2011 1230pm, the place really looks like a III class ward in General Hospital. The condition is bad, partial organize and smell bad!

Uncle Cheong told us that he has built another home at Kampung Salak South and for the last 12 months, he is still waiting for his ~~bloody~~ local council approval on a CF in order to move in. The condition is much better there and he need racks, shelf and equipment in the new center later.

Overall, Uncle Cheong is paying RM7,888 as rental of the current center to the cemetery foundation, contract will end in 2013 while the food and necessity are donated by general public from time to time. He have 6 foreign workers as helpers to clean the seniors (some can't walk and depend heavily on diapers). Uncle Cheong allow them to eat what ever food they like as he feel no points restrict them to enjoy the meal even thought some food like ducks are not advisable to be consumed by seniors. Uncle Cheong work his own way out to buried those who passed away (uncle is a coffin seller), with his network and relationship with the Sg. Besi Kong Tong Yi San, he sometimes pays small fee to buried the seniors and when his own economy is bad, he does not pay..and the staff in the cemetery understood it.

Uncle Cheong also set up a Chinese medical center within the senior care center with the aim to get their own panel of Chinese sensei to look after the seniors' medical need. He welcome all sort of donation and trying to avoid cash. He said that volunteer and general public are allow to give ang pow to the seniors (55 + 5 workers). The ang paw will be kept by the seniors themselves.

He encounters some individual volunteer who so call helping at the center, but at the end turn up to be thief and steal away the medicine, Milo and goods from center. These culprits kept the valuables in the dustbin bags and pack home then.

Uncle Cheong does not accept any abandon seniors near the road unless it is from authority such as General hospital, welfare department, political parties with the conditions of an official hand over letter and documentations. He encounter some conman who claimed themselves as the next kind of the seniors and accused that him of trying to cheat their monies by kidnapping their parents to the center. There are few cases reported in the press on his center and Uncle Cheong is very mad about it. Hence, he does not allow walk-in seniors or abandon ones without proper documentation from authorities to avoid his name to be incriminated.

Our group, delivered two cars of goods, special thank to Ms. Sanddie and family who donated at the own capacity of rice, Milo, creamer, washing powder, cooking oils, dustbin bags, detergent, and etc. 1M1C funded $M390.84 (oats, cooking oil, Milo, creamer, toilet rolls, dettol, cough syrup, bee hoon, sugar, mosquito spray, etc).

We intend to contribute the TTF rack to this home when they obtained their CF later. Ladies & gentlemen, stay tunes with 1M1C again. We hope we are allowed to rob more the rich and help the poor and needed in the future.

Kechara Soup Kitchen ~ my second visit

I volunteered for my 2nd time to KSK (3/9/2100). However, I wasnt aware that I need to inform by 6pm if I will participate that night Normally, all will require to send SMS to Kok Wai so that he know who will be coming that night and easier to assigned the volunteers. I reached there about 1030pm and realised my team Jln Tun Perak already left. Hence, I was assigned to another team that will be covering Cahaya Suria, which is located opposite of Menara Maybank. We departed at 11pm and when we arrived, the car park attendant was helpful to assist us to park the cars and unload the feeding pack.

Our team was about 9 of us, and while some were unloading the food stuff, some were arranging the food for ease of distribution. The total pack allocated were 90 packs. The crowd knows the drill ~ line up! :) So, its not so hard to get them in line. The crowd waited patiently for their turns.Each feeding back consist of a pack of vegetarian meal, 2 small pack of biscuits, 1 orange, 1 bottle of mineral water. For this round, there were also old clothes for distribution. hence, another queue was form and ..we begin to give 1 person 1 piece of cothing. Some are selective and wanted more..but as there are only limited amount, we can only give one each. For a first timer, I think it looks intimidating as I was wondering if it could be a rush for things and we end up having a riot! But, I guess my thoughts were unfounded.

In terms of clothings, some are quiet selective on the clothing type, while some just accept what was given. Some of them even requested for soap, which we only have 3 bars to give around. During the food distribution, I noticed a kid roughly 3-4 years old queuing up for the foodpack. As there were some kids clothes as well, I took a few piece and try to find the kid. I asked around was shown to the far end of our distribution point, where there are more people sleeping on cardboard on the ground. Over here, I noticed that there was a family of 5 sleeping on the ground. I passed the clothes to the younger one and they accepted the clothes. Here, I met Azman in his early thirties, with his wife, aged 22, and three young kids. The kids look skinny and lack of nutrition. It looks like they missed the food distribution as they are not aware of it.

As the food distribution ends, even the boxes were not spared. I got 'scolded' by an uncle, for the box that he wanted was grabbed by another guy. I guess, it would probably be his bed for the night. Some of them try their luck to come for second round, but we do tell them that 'you already taken this earlier', and off course, they are getting it for their 'friends'....

Once the food has been all been distributed, we walk around the place and team lead Poh Chu manage to start a conversation with Azman. Based on the discussion, it seems that Azman is from Penang and working as a security guard in Sg. Besi. As the company does not provide accommodation for family, he does not have a place to stay. He said that he had a quarrel with family, hence left the family. He said that he will be sending the kids to Pahang boarding school tomorrow, but we cant verified if this is true or not. Poh Chu advised him to forgive and forget and go back to the family for the kids sake.

As we leave the place, we noticed a few older man, too sleeping nearby. Everyone seems to have their 'private' space being defined by the piece of cardboard on the ground. Bit heart breaking to see everyone is eating at the restaurant at this late hours and A&W, McD and Nandos are just within 50 meters away...

Addendum : While passing by the place few days later, I reliased that the place the family slept that night, was outside our multi-million dollar toilet aka Automatic Street Toilet! I cant take the photos at night, but will posted when I get stuck in the jam again!

Kechara Soup Kitchen ~ my first visit

After delaying for a long time, my procrastination energy ran out and i finally made my way to KSK to volunteer my time! I departed early to find the location. For once, I think I just want to be the follower rather than the organiser! Location of the place is at Jalan Barat off Jalan Imbi, so shouldnt be too hard to find.

There were 5 new faces including me this week, and we were shown the KSK introduction DVD by Kwok Wai while waiting for the rest to arrive. We were told to arrive at 8pm to listen to the briefing for the first timer. Once the briefing is completed, we went to the ground floor for a short presentation on KSK objectives and mission by Karen. Part of the rule is not to take photograph of the homeless people, hence this entry will be a text only entry! :) Listening the street experience from Wong and Karen is an eye opener!

During that time, more volunteers arrived and food packs were assigned and allocated as per location. For this weekend, the total food pack distributed was for 500 pax, 150 packs fewer than the week before. Each feeding pack consist of 1 pack of vegetarian rice, 2 pack of biscuits, 1 orange, 1 loaf of bread and 1 bottle of mineral water.The place was full of bread, donated by Hi-5 and you can imagine there are 500 loaves of it and there are also boxes of IKO biscuits. This week's food was lesser by 150 due to lack of response the week earlier. There are also walk-in 'customer' and 40 packs were allocated for them. There are total of 12 locations to distribute and once the food are correctly allocated, its loaded up to the cars.

I noticed that there are a lot of young volunteers and made me feel bit old (!). Most of them are quiet familiar with the activities of the night and are aware of their location of distribution well. I was assigned to distribute at Jalan Tun Perak, with 3 veterans, Johnny & Elise and Jane who have been doing this for 2 years. So, for once, I just want to follow the lead... ;) We have a briefing at 1030pm for the night's activity and instructions were given on do's and dont's of the night feeding.

Once its done, we departed at 11pm and arrived at our first drop off point, a closed down Chinese restaurant (Golden Palace Restaurant) along Jalan Pudu. Here we gave 2 feeding packs to a homeless person but didnt see his partner. While we were there, the man was busy making his 'bed' on the floor with cardboards and newspapers...and next door is the Swiss Garden hotel....There were supposed to be more people here at this drop off point, but due to recent road resurfacing, most of them were not there as the building is also under renovation. We proceed further down the road to an abandoned building after the Magnum head office.

Here, the crowd was expecting us and approach us once they saw the familiar faces of Johnny and Elies. As Elise gave them their rice and biscuits pack, I distributed loaves of bread, biscuits and water from my car. There were about 15 people here at this point. Receipients were mostly Indians and Chinese, while I do see one or two Malays as well. Some of them are well dressed in long sleeve and long pants, and I bet no one will know that they are homeless if you pass by them during the day. A few were grateful, thanking and shaking our hands and even though it is just a simple feeding pack for most of us, but for them, it could just be their first meal.

The next pit stop was after Pudu Raya station before the hotel. Over here, we distributed about 10 packs of food before proceed to the next stop, which is the bus stop stand in front of Menara Maybank. We distributed to about 6 person here, and at this location, Johnny managed to request a walker from KSK to be given to a homeless man with diabetic based on his last week visit. He was sleeping on the bus stop when we arrived and there were 3 other people sleeping there as well. As we leave the food to them, Johnny woke up Chong and he responded to him. He sounds happy and cheerful to see us and Johnny told him about the walker. He tried using the walker and was very happy with it. Our concern was it just might be stolen.

The next stop was the old pre-war shop lots behind Menara Maybank, opposite the backpackers hotel. It came to me as a surprised, as I passed by the place most of the time. We packed about 5 packs of food, knocked on the blue sliding metal door. I was shocked to see the inner part of the ground floor, as it has 4 rooms on each side, and the room size is about size of an office cubicle! The main person here is Raju, which speaks Cantonese fluently, and seems that he is incharge of taking care of the people here. I was told he is taking care of a old blind person. As they heard Raju called them, most of them came down to take their food package.

The final stop was the somewhere further after 7-11 along Jalan Pudu, where we stopped by and gave the food pack to a guy, who just ignored Elise when she hand over the food. Elise just leave the food beside him and we went further down the road and gave the last of the food items to 2 homeless.

It took us an hour to finish distributing the food, and we say good bye to each other and departed home. As I passed by Menara Maybank bus stop from the other side of the road, I noticed that Chong was testing out his walker and all I could remember was his swollen legs and his blue bag which he used as a pillow. :(

It was 1215am as I left KL, and seeing the hordes of people doing their Hari Raya shopping along Jalan Tun Perak/OCBC, the thought of homeless people who has nothing at all are just 200 meters away. Somehow, it just doesnt feel right. While we sleep in our comfortable bed tonight, within the security of our homes, there are many out there does not and their bed could be either the the bus stop or just the floor outside a building. ;(

Shah Alam Soup Kitchen

I first heard about free meals for the poor from a friend, and heard about it a few days later. I start googling and there were a few online links and found out where it is located. First attempt to find the location failed due to heavy traffic and need to concentrate on the road, and second attempt was done over the weekend with friends and family. We went to down and manage to talked to the worker on how the soup kitchen work. We decided to come back again when the owner is around.

Our second visit was on a weekday, and manage to speak to both husband and wife, En. Saufi and Pn Liza. We were given a run through on their operation and the scope of their volunteerism. Basically, beside the soup kitchen, they also provide monthly groceries to those needy homes, free tuition (at the 1st floor of the restaurant). The general guideline for applying for the monthly groceries would be the total household income must not be more than RM540, which many are around that amount, considering the soup kitchen is located within a factory zone. The people who came to eat come from multiple races and background.

While we were there, we saw people from different background and races came for lunch (around 1130am). Menu for Mondays/Wednesday and Fridays are rice and vegetables, while Tue/Thu is meehoon. Menus were change daily in order not to affect the nearby restaurant business and also to avoid boredom eating the same stuff. With the information that we gathered, Project Made and 1M1C decided to do a grocery donation for the month of Aug.

On 3rd Aug 2011, we donated the following groceries (5 packs rice, 10 packs of mee hoon, sardines (x 30 cans), 2 packs of garlic and cooking oil x2) to the soup kitchen. Project Made donated a lot of Maggi chilies and also 240 packs of 1liter Milo!!!

We are planning to sponsor a meal on Saturday (17/9/2011). As the soup kitchen only open from Mon-Fri, weekends are used for organising the place, packing of used clothes, etc. Hence, Pn Liza was happy to open the Saturday for us to sponsor the meal to the needies. Hence, we are hoping to have volunteers to help us on that day. We are planning to sponsor one meal a month till Dec 2011, hence we will need volunteers and sponsors to make this a success.

We traveled fast to ensure that we can finish early. As Ainie & Joseph are well-versed with the location, we just have to keep up with them due to time constraint.

At the above house, a curious neighbour asked me what are we doing and I told her that we are feeding the poor. The remark I got was "do they look like they need help?". I was bit upset with the statement as I feel that if you are not willing to help, why not just keep quiet. No doubt we do not know what is the background of the family, but if someone in the family is working, I know at least they are doing something for themselves. The kids are listed as poor in the school, hence they are also part of the feeding list. I know there are people who would ask how can we really know if they need help, and I can only say, we cant as we are doing this on humanitarian grounds and if they took all the trouble to deceive us, there is nothing much we can do.

As traffic was heavy at certain stretch of the road, we got lost following the lead car. Hence, we waited at petrol station for Ainie & Joseph and take a breather. Later was told that was the last few to be delivered and the team break up for lunch. Some of the homes that we visited had no one around, hence Pastor Joseph will deliver it.

The following entry was written by a fellow volunteer whom provided another perspective.

Saturday 16 July 2011 is a memorable day for me and my family, the day we were introduced to another side of world, the poverty world of the hardcore poor in society, one often read about but rarely ventured into. My interest in this area first sparked when I came upon the noble works done by Project MADE, an NGO founded and lead by a dynamic lady Hajjah Ainie Sahnam. Even then, I already find her enthusiasm and selfless commitment truly awe-inspiring and hope that someday I can have the chance to personally meet her. God must have heard my wish and sent an angel in the form of 1Month 1Charity’s organiser, Chew, to make my wish possible.

When we came to know that 1Month 1Charity will team up with Project MADE for their Feeding Program in Kuala Selangor, I immediately knew I will not forgo this chance to learn and experience this wing of charity from the experienced people. However, dear Hubby was a bit apprehensive at first, due to his concern on my health. After some assurance and also due to his own compassionate nature, I managed to secure his support on attending this event.

As we are residing quite a distance away from Kuala Selangor, we bundled up our kids and our portion of the feeding packs consisting of rice, flour, meehoon, salt, sugar, sardine and soap bar in the car and started our journey before sunrise, hoping to reach there before the designated time. The journey was blissfully smooth until we encountered heavy lorries and for awhile were quite worried if we were able to make it on time.

The group of us, comprising of Hajjah Ainie and the soon-to-be Pastor Joseph from Project MADE’s team, 1Month 1Charity’s organiser Chew, regular members Jacinta and Tony, my husband Ong, my 2 kids, myself and joining us for the first time are four students from Sunway College, all gathered at a Mamak Restaurant opposite IPD Kuala Selangor and had an informal get-to-know each other session over breakfast before organising ourselves into a convoy of 4 cars. Today’s Feeding Program’s distribution list has 40 families spread out over Kuala Selangor, Tanjung Karang, Batang Berjuntai and Ijok, which we target to finish distribution by 2pm.

It may not look like a house, but it is a home for them

We started out at 9am with our first distribution in Tanjong Karang area. It was both a saddening and enriching experience to see the recipients faces and being briefed on their condition by Project MADE team as we go round carrying out our distribution tasks. On our part, seeing these people’s pitiful living condition enforces in ourselves our personal believe all this while, which is to live our life in a simple manner so that we can use our blessings to help others. True to the saying “Many hands make light work”, by 10am we already covered up to 6 homes and proceeded to our next destination Kg Koboi, where we distributed our feeding packs to another 7 families before proceeding to Kg Sg Yu and Teluk Piah where another 5 homes are located. Most of these houses have one thing in common, their condition is run-down and the inside is usually quite bare of furniture, with just a decent couch or chairs and racks for storing things.

The Road to Ijok

By 11.30am, we were on our way to Ijok area where our distribution were to some homes located within the plantation estate. Same atmosphere greeted us wherever we went, children joyfully running out to receive bread and biscuits and adults thanking us profusely for our contribution, showing their appreciation to our presence. Along the way, we notice that Hajjah Ainie and Joseph never failed to enquire these families on the welfare and needs, and their genuine interest clearly endears them to the hearts of these people. My respect and admiration for these two with big hearts has grown much by the end of this trip.

Our last leg of the journey brought us to Kg Api-Api, which we found out was the place where Joseph grew up in. The last two families’ living condition is truly pitiful. One home we went to belongs to an old lady whose husband had passed away and left her with a daughter and a son. The daughter has married and moved away but leave her children there to be cared by the old lady while she works. The son who is living with her barely earns enough to support himself and spents it all on alcohol, relying on his old mother to provide him his meals. The old lady was crying as she relates her story to us.

By the time we completed our distribution, it was close to 3pm. We said our goodbyes to Hajjah Ainie and Joseph, agreeing to keep in touch with sincere hope that we may meet again in this noble path. Our student friends from Sunway also made their departure, leaving the rest of us contemplating where to fill our stomach. Following Chew’s lead, we arrived at a riverside seafood restaurant where he graciously “feed” us with a sumptuous late lunch as reward for our work done in feeding the poor.

We parted ways after that and while Chew, Jacinta and Tony headed for home, husband and myself lingered on a little while longer, driving around, taking in the scenery, talking over the day’s event. We plan to come back again sometime soon…

Feeding the Poor at Kuala Selangor (Part 1)

The planning for this feeding started about 2 months ago. In June 2010, a friend forwarded me a link, friendsofkapar.com. I visited the site and find that it would be a beneficial way for 1M1C to do our future visits compare to our normal monthly visits, as we are concentrating on a single home, while in this way we can be more diversified in multiple homes.

With work and personal live keeping the team busy, the next encounter was 2 months back when I visited the site again. But this time, the URL is not valid anymore. Did some Goggling and somehow, manage to find Project MADE in blogspot and Facebook. Thus, I made contact with the Project Co-ordinator and have our first meeting and see how we can work together, being the fact that we are still new and inexperience. We decided that 1M1C will participate in July's feeding instead of June as there was already a sponsor for it.

And I guess, as the saying goes... the rest is history! :) For this visit, we had more than 10 volunteers that wanted to join, but due to transportation logistic, we were not able to cater for all. Pre-planning work started with distributing the purchases of 40 homes to 3 volunteers. The list of items was provided and we purchased the following :-

Rice (5kg)
1 packet salt
1 packet of sugar
1 packet of meehoon
1 can of sardine
Dhall (purchased large sack and repack)
3x bath soap

Biscuits for the kids, and 10 pack of milk powders. The rest is standard issued feeding pack.

As we only purchased standard groceries, we thought giving extra items, which is soap (yes, its a luxury for them even though its only RM1.90!). And as usual, our wishes were mysteriously answered with 120 bars of soap donated by a Good Samaritan. (I need a new car... >.< )

I started my journey early, and with no traffic expected, I had a smooth drive. Took me about 45 minutes to reach Kuala Selangor and weather was bit gloomy. I was worried if it would rain today but luckily it didnt.

Oh its my turn to cross the road.. traffic light have to take number only can cross one.. my number is 47! Just kidding la!

We meet up at IPD Kuala Selangor at 0800 and glad that no one got lost. We had a quick breakfast and introduction before the long day ahead. We also have 4 students from Sunway College joining us. As we have 40 homes to go distribute, we reorganized the feeding pack into the cars and left one car at the restaurant to avoid a large contingent.

The homes' selection criteria are based on those categorized as poor from the school. Hence, entering a poor residential area, it is heart breaking to see that neighbours came out, expecting that we give them a feeding pack and yet they are not in our list. ;( Again, we cant possibly help the whole neighbourhood. The objectives of this feeding are to ensure that the homes do not need to worry about the food for the few days so that they can go look for jobs. It is also not to create a welfare state where they depend on donation to survive.

We depart for another house nearby and provide the kids with bread and biscuits. I can see their happiness getting it, as I believe they dont get this often. For a small item that we gave, the smiles on their faces are priceless.

The house is also dilapidated and supposedly to be renovated by 1MDB.

We depart to Pastor Joseph's home as there were a lot of used clothes that we will put in his home.

Beautiful Gates Foundation For the Disabled, Klang

Due to timing and schedule, we have postpone this trip twice and we finally made it to Beautiful Gates in Klang. As usual, I do a site visit before the day and understand what are their requirements. The caretaker, Mr Lee, requested for a cloth hanger as the current old is spoilt, bath towels and also a microwave oven. Hence, I posted it in FB and very happy to know we have a good Samaritan who donated a brand new microwave. Perhaps, good things does come in TWO ..and we also found another volunteer who willing to donate hers' too! :)

This van was purchased via public donation. Another one was donated by 99 Speedmart. Both vans have been modified to be handicapped friendly at the cost of RM20k each.

Mr Lee and Committee Member, Ms Esther brief us on the center's operations

We were greeted by Mr. Lee, the caretaker of the home. The Centre is housed in a double-storey corner house with five bedrooms, located in a relatively busy part of Taman Chi Liung, with restaurants, minimarts and other shops within walking distance. Currently, there are 15 tenants in the home, with only 3 paying tenants(RM300). Hence, the amount is insufficient for home's expenses and the home supplement the income via recycling of materials.

There are a number of recycle bin within the Klang housing area which allow Klangites to donate the items. The recycle bins was donated by the Japan Government. After the Japan Tsunami, Beautiful Gates donated the money sold from the recycle stuff to the tsunami fund as a payback for their contribution. Esther informed that these vans are also utilised to transport some invalid or disabled people from nearby neighbourhood to nearby hospitals for their regular checkups or even for short outings. This is truly a shining example of sharing of blessings with others.

Mr. Lee's working area

The small area adjacent to the house is converted into a mini-workshop for the use of some of the disabled residents with skills in repairing electrical equipment and even computers, which they collected via their recycling lorry or drop-ins from their recycle bins. Ms. Esther also explained their role which is to make the tenants independent as they cant depend on the center forever.

The home provide basic training such as telemarketing and repairing electrical to the tenants, so that they are self suffice and will not need to depend on the home for survival. The tenants are happy here, till they do not want to go back to their own home! :)

God does work in a mysterious way, sometimes things may turn for the better when it get worst. Example was when their TV was spoilt, a good Samaritan happened to call up and asked what they want and decide to purchase when they told them about the TV. Same case here with their mircowave oven. Another good Samaritan just donated a 2nd hand lorry, and they are looking for a lorry driver to help them pick up the recyclable items. Currently, the committee members sometimes do a double job as the lorry driver when there are items to be pick up.

We were briefed for almost an hour, and it was very beneficial to us, as it provide us an insight how the center function and their daily lifes. They also looking for small home businesses, which if you know anyone that requires the resources, do contact Mr. Lee at the 3372 6094. As I sit down and listen, I realized that there are many things in life that we took for granted, and we still complained and want more, yet for them it is a luxury.

As Esther was briefing us, we were shyly joined by a few of the residents with various disabilities, some were born with it, some acquired it through accidents or illness. From their smiles and beaming disposition, you can see that they accept their disabilities well and learn to cope with them the best they can. Esther said that the residents there are very independent and even look out for each other, a common trait which I notice in most of the Homes and Centres. The camaraderie among them is truly to be respected. The greatest testimony of this Centre’s good work and effort in ensuring its residents welfare can be seen in some of the residents’s unwillingness to go home during weekends or festivals. The few residents which were there with us all nodded their heads in agreement when Esther jokingly complained that she has to coax them to go home and spend some time with their families so she can have some rest.We also found out that they like to eat KFC, so, if you are around the neighbourhood the next time and would like to cheer them up, you know what to buy!

Special thanks to Ong & Wendy for the microwave. It means a lot to them, as the current one was beyond repair. Unknowingly, we also purchase some vegetables for them, but as due to their physical condition, they are unable to cook, hence they cater food. And in this case, microwave helps them to warm up their food.

As we have been there for about 1 hour, we decided to leave and go to the next home. We have been here before, Pusat Warga Emas. When we reach there, the caretaker still remember us and asked about Lai, and I had a deja vu as I remember Lai told me this home does need a lot of help. We spend some time chatting and leave as it was bit late in the evening.

We would like to thank Ong & Wendy + kids for the microwave, and Jacinta's presence in our visit again. Thank you all for the support and also, not forgetting the donors who have make all this possible.

Visit to BOAS Home (Drug Rehabilitation Center)

Due to last minute changes, I selected BOAS Home for June's visit. After searching high and low, managed to find the place as was not familiar with the place. I did an onsite visit few days before today. We purchased the normal groceries and the only thing they specially request was bathing soap.. ;)

The home has been established for 14 years, with the last 8 years at the current location. The place is registered with Agensi Anti Dadah Kebangsaan, which only accept non-Muslim drug addicts for rehabilitation. Currently, the place is accommodating 68 tenants under the rehabilitation program. Some of the tenants are admitted by the families, while there are those who join the center voluntary. Pastor Nathan do go to places in town to find if anyone wants to join the rehab. The place is rented at RM1800 a month, and gets its funding from church and some from the addicts family.

The rehabilitation plan is a 2 years program to help the addicts to start with a new live. Daily schedule requires the tenants to be up by 5:25am, with 30 minutes to prepare themselves for morning class. Rules are strictly enforced here to ensure that they are well behaved and discipline. The successfulness of the program can be seen with 2 of the graduates are pastor now.

For those that break the rules, their names will be recorded and after 3 times, they will be discipline ~ by writing verses or no movies (sound like school days?). Over the weekend, schedules are more relax for visitors from 2pm-4pm.

Pastor Nathan gave us a talk on the types of drugs, effects and rehabilitation experience each addicts have to go through. Most of us have heard how dangerous drugs are, but I think this is a first hand information / knowledge sharing for everyone of us. After the talk, he took us around to show us the home. Was a pretty interesting place as I dont think I seen goats anywhere in Klang Valley..yes.. goats! :)

Pot Luck @ Rumah Caring Kajang

For this month's activity, we planned for a pot luck lunch at Rumah Caring Kajang. We had been here before and this would be our 3rd visit. We decided to do a pot luck lunch, in conjunction with Mother's & Father's day celebration. We arrived around 11:30am, and while waiting for some of them to return from Sunday service, we prepare the food and to be served.

The chairlady, Ms Wendy mentioned that this is a 'dry season', as most of the time, people will donate during CNY and Ghost festival, where temples will provide the groceries. Hence, this visit comes at a good time when less people donate to homes.

We have a wonderful chef who cook mee hoon, fried rice and vegetables for lunch. Some of the stuff were brought by another team which is much appreciated, being able to add on to the menu. We had jelly, fruits, red bean soup, packet soya bean drinks and KFC. Thanks to all who contributed one way or another to make this a successful lunch!

Meet up with the team in Tesco Cheras as usual, and proceed with the purchase of groceries. We have earlier ask for the list of items to buy and prepare the list and split it into 3 trolleys. So, it took only 30minutes to finished the purchase. I can say that our timing has improved a lot since then! :)

When we reach there, they were expecting us. The caretaker inform us on the house. The house currently caters from for those from 1 year old to early 20's from multiple races. Most of them are from broken family or single mom.

Most of the teenagers are Orang Asli from Pahang, and we were told that they are here because of the condition in living in the jungle. Under the home, they are provided with education and better living environment. there are also indian, chinese and malay as well. The house we visited was for girls only, while the other one adjacent right at the back is for the boys.

This center has around 90 babies, under aged kids and adults. Some of the kids are bit aggressive and not shy to greet us, and some are adults are friendly.

For this trip, we have new guest who joined us, Ms Sanddie and her 2 kids. We were late they waiting for us with 3 shopping carts (more Gung-ho than us!). After distributing the shopping list, we took almost 1 hour to complete the purchase.

We arrived around 230pm and unloaded the groceries. The kids looks happy to see us and some of them came to shake hand with us with a cheerful face. Overall, the center is well maintained and managed. This house has 3 centers, one of it is a learning center with a computer lab and library in it.

As we entered the hall and saw about 10 babies whom are handicapped. We felt so sad looking at them, but to know they are being well taken care of by the home, it provide some consolation. The caretakers need to pay a lot of attention when doing physiotherapy to the babies.

As usual, we meet up at the nearest Tesco, and proceed with buying the required groceries. We have 14 people accepted our invitation, but only end up with 6 people attending. Hopefully if you are not attending, kindly change your status as we were waiting 30min for the invisible 8 :P. Anyway, we purchased our groceries as normal and proceed to the home. However, due to wrong information, we end up in the learning center of the home. Traveling took about 1hour with 3 cars (cursing) behind me...:( So, make sure do a site visit before we proceed. The home of the address is 23, Jln Tujuh, Tmn Tenaga. Location of the place is bit hard to find, so my advice, search the place before going.

When we reach there, the kids were watching TV and some of them were expecting us. They helped us to unload the groceries. As Ms Lesley was not there, the pastor greeted us and we explained to him about our trip to the home.

Our delivery got mixed up with another group's delivery. Seriously, RM300+ cant really buy much these days!

Our deliveries include panadol and cough syrup, rice, cooking oil, floor detergent, chicken meat, chicken balls, canned food and beans.

Outside the house

We also met up with the team from Raleigh KL, which came about 2pm (whom also got lost!). They brought a lot of toys and play games with the kids. We didnt stay long enough to participate due to short of time. The photos from their event are posted here.

Visit to Drug Rehabilitation Center (Cheras)

For a change, we decided to go to a drug rehabilitation center instead of the normal old folk/orphanage. The home located at Cheras Perdana which is maintained by Mr Low. The house is also supported by Ms Wendy (from Kajang Caring Home) which is how we get to know about this place. As usual, we called and arrange the date, time and what is required by the home. For today's visit, I purchased all groceries first to save time. We meet up at Jaya Jusco Cheras Perdana before proceed to the home.

When we reach there, Mr Low was outside expecting us. He briefed us on the house 10 years history. The house provides counseling and guidance for those who have got involved in drugs. The total tenants here are 25, all males, age ranging from 15-40 and all Chinese, except 1 Indian. Most of them are sent here by families with the hope that they will change for the better.

Advisory board

Mr Low as a former drug addict, has taken the role to help these tenants by guiding them and provide a place called home. Most of them stay for at least 12-18 months to go through the rehabilitation course, and once they are confident to leave the place, they will return to the society. They will follow up with them to see if they are able to adapt to the outside world and if not, they are always welcome back to the home.

By guiding them to the correct path, it reduce less issues in our complex society. It is a long road, but it is a start. We hope the public will support homes like this, provide those who have recovered a job and a second chance, as rejecting them will only push them where they started. While we were there, there was about ten of them, well behave and chit chatting outside the garden. With their willingness to be there, it brings more hope of recovery.

Based on the information provided by Mr Low, the most popular drug now is syabu, also known as 'ice'. Syabu caused users to hallucinate, which can last for a few days. I wont elaborate here on the outcome of using drugs, but impact of it can be read from here and here.

Everyone in the home does their own house chores to instill self discipline and self-reliance. So, no washing machine here! For groceries, the home do get unsold vegetables from the market donated by the vegetable sellers, and sometime, chap farn stalls brings their daily left over here. (Finally, my unanswered question is answered!)

Every quarterly, the home has to submit a report to Agensi Anti-Dadah Kerajaan (ADK). Currently, the agency is considering provide funding to the home. As maintaining the home is not an easy task, we hope more people will donate food and groceries.

2010 Report

Planned to do a summary of 2010 activity, but was tied up with work. So finally, spend some time and manage to complete it.

Our Mission
To do one charity a month.

Background
The idea of 1M1C started from discussions on what we can do to give back to the society. As we look into our lives, knowing we are much more fortunate compared to many people. Hence, we started to collect money and able to contribute to the homes that needs help. Our first month collection was only RM200 and it start growing from there.

The TEAM
We have a core team to plan, co-ordinate the monthly activities and collection of funds. Our funding comes from donors and strangers who comes and go, depending on their financial capability.

Permanent Donors
During the early stage, donors comes and go. With new people joining, ideas were formed and decide that we can have a group of permanent donors, which makes planning easier as we know we have a minimum amount to contribute in a month.

Our Hope
As our contributions are very minimal compared to the homes' monthly expenditure, which can comes up to RM10-30k a month, we hope that based on our visit and blog update, it will open the path to those people who read it, hoping they will do their contribution themselves without us and also to generate more awareness to the public. Based on our visits across Klang Valley, there are homes in every town that you can help.

Moving Forward
We hope readers will be inspired to do more charity and help others in need. With price of groceries going up, the homes need every single little contribution that you can help.
